Sonically speaking, “Hit the Surf” by The Sea Shells is one of the more interesting productions from the original surf era:
From Rhino’s surf music box set, one learns that this tune was recorded very late in the game for surf’s first wave – June 1967 – the musical landscape having been permanently altered by the likes of “Light My Fire” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Could this possibly be the last recorded song of the original surf era?
Though this information is printed on the 45 label, it should be noted that “Hit The Surf” was authored by Robert Kalina, with musical direction by Alan Lorber, and overall supervision by Mickey Eichner.
