Discoveries of a Pop Music Archaeologist

George Jones & Gene Pitney Have Five Dollars – and It’s Saturday Night!

Tonight I was supposed to have seen George Jones play in Lancaster, PA as part of his Farewell Tour, but unfortunately, “The Possum” departed this earthly plane on April 26th.  Somehow I will have to make do with his recordings — such as this one:

I’ve Got Five Dollars And It’s Saturday Night

George Jones & Gene Pitney (1965)

George Jones handily steals the show on this fun duet with Gene Pitney.  This “George And Gene” single  “bubbled under” the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 1965 (#101), while hitting Billboard‘s Top 20 Country chart the following month (#15), and also reaching Cash Box‘s Top 50 Country chart and Record World‘s Top 15 Country Singles chart (#13).

Record World‘s review in their February 20, 1965 edition

Two big sellers have hooked up with each other for an exciting c & w disk.  They should do-see-dough well.

Billboard would weigh in the following week

The combination of Jones and Pitney can’t miss. Their individual styles blend perfectly on material that should hit fast and furious on the pop charts as well. Flip is the famous, traditional country number well performed by the duo.
