Rick Rosas: Bass as Bottom End

A respectful tip of the hat to bassist, Rick Rosas, who passed last week.  I first learned of his work when I happened to catch Heart of Gold during its initial run in a local cinema palace with great sound.  The first half of the film is Neil Young and his band playing at the Ryman, the original Opry venue, and Neil makes some great and funny references to these hallowed grounds in the film.  I remember being particularly struck by the wonderful deep bottom of Rosas’s bass playing, as on “Falling Off the Face of the Earth” – a track from 2005’s Prairie Wind by Neil Young:

I would learn later that a premiere live performance of Prairie Wind had been held over two nights in August, 2005 at the Ryman and that these concerts would constitute the heart of Jonathan Demme’s film, Heart of Gold.
